When measuring oil flow, engineers must choose between volumetric and mass flow measurement, as each approach has distinct advantages depending on the application. Volumetric flowmeters—such as turbine, positive displacement, and oval gear meters—measure the volume of oil passing through the meter per unit of time. This is expressed in units such as liters per minute (L/min) or gallons per hour (GPH). Volumetric measurement is straightforward and cost-effective, but it is affected by changes in oil density caused by temperature and pressure fluctuations.
Mass flowmeters—most notably Coriolis flowmeters—measure the actual mass of oil flowing through the system, expressed in kilograms per minute (kg/min) or pounds per hour (lb/hr). Because mass is a conserved property that does not change with temperature or pressure, mass flow measurement is inherently more accurate for applications where oil properties vary significantly. In petroleum trading, where oil is often bought and sold by weight rather than volume, Coriolis meters provide a direct and highly accurate measurement without the need for density correction factors.
The choice between volumetric and mass flowmeters involves trade-offs in cost, complexity, and application suitability. Volumetric meters are generally less expensive, easier to maintain, and sufficient for many process monitoring and control applications. Mass flowmeters are more expensive but provide superior accuracy in demanding applications such as custody transfer, blending, and quality control. In some systems, a volumetric meter combined with a densitometer can achieve near-mass flow accuracy at lower cost.
